FAQ

FAQ

Q: Is there any restriction on whether the wind turbine has a vertical or horizontal axis?
A: No. The design brief is very broad and doesn't have many restrictions. However, all decisions should be justified fully. Why is one axis chosen over another? What are the implications for ease of construction and erecting/material costs/energy output etc.

Q: Is the marking criteria going to be made available?
A: Yes, it is. We are still in the process of creating the marking criteria, but when this has been done, it will be made available through the website.

Q: Is there any access to a workshop with equipment (e.g. welding) to help with constructing the blade?
A: No, unfortunately not. We will look into finding one, maybe in the university, but there are no promises. On that note, if anyone has or knows of a workshop that they don't mind sharing with other challenge entrants, please let me know.

Q: Is there any access to the wind tunnel for testing?
A: We have not arranged for this at the moment. Wind tunnel testing requires a degree of knowledge and expertise, so is not as simple as "booking" the tunnel. If you feel you really need to use the wind tunnel, and you have the necessary skils, please email me and we will approach the faculty. Please do not approach them yourselves.

Q: The Design Brief says that the progress report should be 5 pages, but the Progress Report Outline states 3 pages. Which one is the right one?
A: The length of the progress report was shortened to 3 pages to make task easier. The Progress Report Outline is the right version. The 3 pages starts from the introduction section.
