This year’s challenge is centered on the development of small-scale wind turbines made from recycled material.

The idea stems from a local EWB awareness project in schools. The aim is to generate awareness in schools about the importance of renewable energy, sustainability, and the engineering profession and promote Engineers Without Borders. In order to meet these goals, we aim to erect wind turbines made from recycled material in schools. Ideally, these wind-turbines would be erected by the students in the school (under supervision), and be able to power an outdoor feature, for example lighting for the school sign. The turbine is not to be used for commercial power generation, however, if appropriate, EWB will also explore future options of utilizing the wind-turbine in communities in the Pacific.

As a preliminary step to this project, we invite your team to design and construct a model of the turbine blade. The winning design will be carried through to the next stage of the project in 2010. The challenge will incorporate both theoretical reporting, and physical construction and testing. Participating in the challenge will be an excellent opportunity for you to develop technical skills and teamwork skills highly sought after by employers, with the added bonus of working on a real, implemented project.

What does the Challenge Involve?

The competition involves the design of a turbine blade made from recycled material. Your design needs to be justified fully through a written engineering report, accompanied by a 0.50m long physical model of your blade, with a uniform chord length of 0.40m and no twist. Both the report and the physical model will be judged, with a graduated submission process.

How to succeed?

To do well in this competition, teams need to research thoroughly, and apply engineering knowledge of material properties, structural loading, and aerodynamics, as well as other specializations. Specific marking criteria will be released later in the competition; however, we encourage you to keep in mind the overall aim of the project when embarking on your design. The following section outline areas of focus.
