Are we glimpsing the emergence of a green global economy?

A public lecture by Achim Steiner
Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme

The transition to a low-carbon global economy will be challenging, but it is possible. It will require well-coordinated, effective, creative, far reaching and equitable policies, both globally and at a national and sub-national levels. In this talk, Achim Steiner will examine some of the key challenges facing the global community as it seeks to build a more intelligent development trajectory for the 21st century - one that at its heart factors in the real economic costs and opportunities of better environmental management of the Earth's nature based resources and natural assets, including as they relate to energy and global greenhouse gas emissions. The question of agriculture and issue of biofuels are among those challenges and opportunities, as they relate to food security, livelihoods and options for a far less carbon-intensive future for the six, rising to nine, billion people in this world.
