Irrigation System Design Problem Questions
Hi,
I was wondering what sort of plants the irrigation system would be expected to water? Since it is for a garden 50 square metres in size I take it that it is for a small family garden where they may grow some small crops for food?
Also I believe there was recently a project carried out there to retrofit a water system or something. I was just wondering what kind of piping was used for this system? Was it some sort of imported PVC piping or was it something locally sourced? I am trying to work out if there are any suitable local trees or plants that could be easily used for piping but aren't having much luck finding out what actually grows there.
Finally I was just wondering what sort of rural enviroment the system is expected to be used in? I'm guessing we are talking small villages here I was just wondering if you can give me a rough indication of size as I was wondering about sharing the water source and such.
Thanks.

Irrigation System
Hi,
The irrigation system has been envisaged to support micro industry and communities. If you base your design on the crops eaten by Vanuatu people and their exports such as coconut this should suffice.
You are correct there was a recent project in Vanuatu, this was retrofiting a water system. The link is here http://www.ewb.org.nz/projects/vanuatu_08, i will try and get some more information for you (watch this space).
A good area to base your design on project specification is the Tafea province, this is where the previous design challenge was run. The details are as follows:
The islands Futuna and Aneityum have a population of 1200 people consisting of 237 households, 2 schools, several kindergartens and 5 health centres. The Tafea province is the ideal place to base the scope of designs, which gives a good starting point and can be used in other areas. The Tafea province contains 15.6% of the total population.
