Here at EWBNZ we believe that building the technical capacity of local engineers is the most sustainable way to ensure that everyone has access to engineering capability.
One of the ways we do this is through the secondment of experienced engineers to host organisations. We first teach the engineer the skills required to impart knowledge, including the principles of human-centered design and using the strengths based approach. They are then encouraged to work with local counterparts to jointly resolve challenges.
This joint approach ensures that at least one member of any design team is familiar with local customs and culture and can ensure that solutions are appropriate. It also ensures that when the seconded engineer returns to their home country, their technical capabilities remain with their counterpart.
Typically our placements are managed in-country via our partners VSA, with EWBNZ providing technical support through the Technical Support Hub and Health and Safety support through links to our Health and Safety advisor.
If this sounds like you then please check out our volunteer opportunities page, or if you would like to discuss further please get in touch with your local chapter president.
